Today’s HR Spotlight feature is Kevin Chua, the South East Asia’s Chief Human Resources Officer of United World College, a mission-led international school widely recognised as a global leader in International Education.

Kevin is passionate about developing people to help them achieve their potential. This passion led him to become a certified Executive Coach, where he has provided leadership coaching to Board Directors; Business Finance, and HR leaders across the Asia Pacific. He envisions leveraging his expertise in both HR and Executive Coaching to contribute strategically to board’s decisions and governance particularly in an industry facing transformation.

As a senior HR leader, he believes that they have a lot to contribute by serving on boards and that talent is a key agenda in many companies. “Some examples of these issues are aligning leadership compensation to the priorities of the companies.”

Kevin also mentioned that cultural transformation in the business world is necessary – this is where his coaching expertise comes in. As an HR leader, they add to the diversity of thinking when they serve on boards.

The CHRO approaches with great empathy when addressing the unique challenges in the workforce especially when navigating disruptive market forces. According to him, executive coaching by nature is individualized – every approach in every situation is distinctive. Example of this is in his line of expertise where he has the privilege of working with pioneers from different industries.

With Kevin’s extensive international experience in London and Japan, he shared how he has adopted HR strategies to meet the cultural and business differences in different regions. For him, cultural intelligence is one of the top essentials when one’s working in such a very interconnected sphere to be able to comprehend, operate and navigate in the diverse culture. From that experience, Kevin learned to speak his mind in that kind of environment. “Working in a western multinational has an expectation that you voice your opinion and you need to speak up.”
